On a recent trip to the Mersey River in Tasmania I was moving up stream ever so slowly, casting here and there and wondering why I wasn't catching fish. So I thought, what the hell, let's wade upstream with gusto to see what happens. Sure enough trout darted out every 10 meters or so. And I am sure there were more that I could not see. Sometimes all I saw was a fleeting shadow but on a few occasions I saw the whole fish. This gave me the confidence that my technique was at fault, not a lack of fish.
Spooking trout is only going to work in fairly clear water. I am not sure the stained waters in Victoria are clear enough.
